What should our response in light of God's mercy be? The end of Romans 12:1 is translated two popular ways: "which is your spiritual [act of] worship" and "which is your reasonable/rational service or response." What is this "reasonable response" to God's mercy?
Is God worthy of worship in light of who He is - in the splendor (beauty) of His holiness alone? Yes! If that were not enough, look what He has done for us - nothing short of ridiculous and undeserved favor?! It is only reasonable that we offer our entire beings in worship to Him. We are rightfully at His full disposal. This is what worship is: reasonably offering the entirety of our being to God in response to who He is, how He loves, and what He has done. "Love the Lord your God with all your mind, soul, heart and strength." To do any less is very, very unreasonable. We worship also, if for no other reason, because God seeks it from us.
The form of our worship is only secondary. Singing, liturgy, praising, and praying are recognizable forms or doors to worship. True worship is a completion of all the commands of God, a fulfillment of His law in the form of perfect love and obedience. Every fiber of our beings must be utterly swept away into the reality of His presence.
