Meditation

Meditation is a form of listening to God. It is listening to God's Word, His holy scriptures, reflecting on God's works, rehearsing God's deeds, and ruminating on God's law to name a few. It usually involves sustained attention on a single passage of Scripture, a single word, or a single idea. When we meditate, we seek to hear the voice of God, experience his presence, and obey His word. We dwell upon, consider, interpret, and imagine what the meaning is of what God had told us for the purpose of growing into a familiar friendship with Jesus. We detach from the noise, confusion, and discord around us in order to attach to our God.

Three of the most powerful things in this world which tend to pull us away from God are noise, hurry, and crowds. One of the primary purposes of Christian meditation is to simply acknowledge God's presence in our lives. The writers of Scripture knew this and were familiar with the discipline of meditation. Through meditation, God speaks to His people - not because they have special abilities, but because they are willing to listen.

God speaks in a multitude of ways. Too often we look only for the profound, burningbush voice, when God wants to use His "still, small voice" to help us grow spiritually. The discipline of meditation can open our ears, minds, hearts, and lives to the voice of God.
