The Christian life begins when a person places their faith and their hope in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. Calling Jesus "Lord" implies a commitment to seek and follow after him in all that he taught and lived. This is the essence of what it means to live as a disciple. Discipleship is a process where we grow in habits, or disciplines, that plunge us more deeply into the spirituality of following Jesus.
Jesus' teaching was clear in the call to discipleship. He desires a relationship with us! We all know that relationship requires effort, a real investment. Strangely enough, though, what the disciplines afford us is freedom. Many who stand on the edge of this plunge into depth wrongly assess the disciplines as more work, yet another burden added to the load they already carry. Don't make this mistake! Jesus promises that we will find rest for our souls if we follow him in discipleship:
"Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
Matthew 11:29
Are you ready to leap from that edge and take the plunge?
The community of Ethnos Church takes the disciplines seriously. Each month at Ethnos, a different discipline is chosen. You can expect to receive a summary of the monthly discipline, in case you didn't have time to read the chapter. A brief and pertinent study guide will challenge you to think even more deeply about the discipline at hand. Finally, you will be able to share your insights with others in the community at a monthly discussion gathering.
Many excellent resources exist for the Christian pursuing the disciplines. We at Ethnos have chosen to use Richard Foster's book "Celebration of Discipline" as one primary resource in pursing the spiritual disciplines. Foster's work in this book was monumental! Pick up a copy if you don't have one already.
We'd love you to join our community in experiencing the depth of a life lived in and for Jesus Christ!
