When one reads the book of Acts, it is easy to long for what the early Church experienced. We see a great story of God working powerfully to build up His Church. We see the great potential that many of us dream of being realized. We ask, how did that happen?
The answer is guidance. The spiritual discipline of guidance is about seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit. When we are led by Him, the gifting He has given each of us is brought to effective use. The guidance of the Holy Spirit brings unity to the fellowship of believers in the church body. This guidance is absolutely essential for the Church to realize its full potential. We may be gifted, and exercising our gifting, but still not doing so effectively. If our gifts are being exercised in a disconnected, individualistic way, they are not likely to be effectively operating for God's purposes. This reason comes from looking at who is glorified, God or man?
There is much to learn in developing the discipline of guidance, many questions to be asked, and much to be done in developing relationships with those in the Church, and with God. Won't you engage this discipline thoughtfully and humbly?
